Money for MariaMaria was a shopkeeper in the village of B-, in the suburb of St. Petersburg. Living beyond the Great Pine Forest, and therefore much cut off from the rest of the villages, the folk of B- were extremely poor, and often asked kind Maria to sell food to them in debt. Writing down all people owed her in a small notebook, she was sure everyone paid back their debt before the arrival of the village inspector. Maria was sure that she was clear of any debt; she suspected nothing when she saw the inspector fumbling around a little longer than he usually did, checking every document.
